This past weekend the BCBUA held it’s Umpire Academy in Kamloops, BC. Umpires receive an invitation to the Academy as the first step towards attaining their Level III status. It is also an introduction to the Baseball Canada National Program and the beginning of the journey towards becoming a Baseball Canada National Umpire.
This year ten up and coming young Umpires from across the Province were invited to attend the Academy. Two of those invited were Cloverdale’s own Colby Furness and Lane Yakemchuk. Both performed exceptionally well and represented Cloverdale with honors. Colby received the base assignment for a Semi Final game, and Lane received the base assignment for the Gold Medal game.
Further, Lane was informed by Provincial Supervisor Steve Boutang he successfully passed his Level III evaluation with Colby very close to doing the same. Very few pass this evaluation on the first attempt so this is truly an accomplishment for Lane.
The opportunities that lay ahead for all our young umpires in Cloverdale are endless. The achievements of both Lane and Colby are a testament to Cloverdale’s Grassroots Mentorship Program and the hard work all our young Umpires put in every time they step onto the diamond. Please join me in passing along my heartfelt congratulations to both of these young men.
